5 Health Problems You Can Avoid by Keeping Good Oral Health

Neglecting your oral health does not just mean bad breath and dental problems. Poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health problems. That is why it is important to keep a regular routine of good oral hygiene practices to avoid such dilemma.

The key is to have regular visits to your local dentist. Missing dental appointments may not seem like a big issue but once you experience serious oral issues and health problems, you may have wished you did.

Friendly Dental Group's team of dedicated dentists at Friendlydentalgroup.com are not just concerned with resolving tooth decay and other dental problems. They provide the best dental services to keep your oral health and at the same time your overall health in good condition.

By maintaining good oral health, you can avoid the following health problems. These medical conditions have been associated with poor oral health.

1.       Heart Attack – Untreated tooth decay and gum problems can trigger multiplication of bacteria in the mouth which can lead to severe infection. Bacteria can travel from the mouth to the heart and can cause heart attack.

Bacteria can cause inflammation in the blood vessels. When this happens, blood flow is restricted thereby causing increased blood pressure and blood clots, which eventually leads to heart attack or stroke.

2.        Endocarditis – This is a life-threatening condition. It refers to the inflammation of the heart’s valves and muscle lining caused by bacterial infection.

Poor oral hygiene cause bacteria buildup in the mouth which eventually leads to gum diseases. When left untreated, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart causing inflammation to the valves and inner lining.

3.       Type 2 Diabetes – A study published in PLoS One showed the direct correlation between periodontal therapy and type 2 diabetes. The analysis was that treating periodontal disease have significantly improved patients’ blood glucose control.

4.       Osteoporosis – Periodontitis and tooth loss have known to cause or worsen osteoporosis (bone loss). Several studies have shown that patients who have osteoporosis have frequent or untreated gum diseases. The inflammation caused by periodontitis is seen as the main culprit in bone damage.

5.       Lung Problems – Bacterial infection caused by untreated gum problems can travel to the lungs and increase bacteria buildup and inflammation of pulmonary arteries. This condition may cause or worsen lung problems such as Pneumonia and COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Keeping your oral health is as important as maintaining a good healthy lifestyle. Visit your local dentist regularly to avoid serious dental problems that can cause life-threatening medical conditions.

Prevention is always better than treating oral problems. For more information on how to keep your gums health and your teeth in check, contact the dedicated team at Friendly Dental Group of Holly Springs by visiting:

This is so true, to avoid long term oral health issues, you need to focus on regular check-ups with your dentist. That is like any health related issues, finding small issues before they grow to larger concerns by having regular check-ups is key!
